Speaking of pumpkins… we’ve prepared a very special crafting idea for you!

DIY Instructions: Pumpkin Candleholders Made of Modeling Clay

This autumn decoration idea isn’t just a real eye-catcher, it’s also super easy to make. So what do you need? With a bit of modeling clay, some paint, and a little imagination, you can create stylish seasonal decorations for your table, windowsill, or shelf.

Enjoy a cup of tea surrounded by candles in handmade pumpkin candleholders!

You’ll need:

  • 500 g of air-drying modeling clay
  • 1 tealight
  • 1 candle
  • Rubber bands
  • Acrylic paint of your choice
  • Paintbrush
  • Small scissors
  • A bit of aluminum foil (for the candle holder)
  • A little water
  • Optional: a knife

Step-by-step to your pumpkin décor:

  1. Knead & prepare: Divide the clay into smaller pieces and knead until smooth.
  2. Shape: Roll two balls – a larger one for the tealight, a smaller one for the candle. Use a little water to smooth out imperfections. Tip: don’t make them too round – shape them slightly taller!
  3. Make space for the lights: Press the tealight and candle into the middle of the balls. Remove the candle afterward and replace it with a foil placeholder.
  4. Create pumpkin grooves: Wrap rubber bands around the balls to form the typical pumpkin ridges.
  5. Let dry: Now patience is key – let them dry thoroughly (at least 24 hours, depending on room temperature).
  6. Finishing touches: Carefully cut off the rubber bands with scissors.
  7. Paint: Time for color! Whether classic orange, elegant gold, or deep autumn green – let your creativity run free.

Extra tip: Self-adhesive wax dots from the drugstore help keep your candle safely in place.

⚠️ Important: Never leave burning candles unattended!

Why Crafting in Autumn Makes You Happy

There are plenty of reasons why autumn is the best season for DIY:

  • Cozy atmosphere: Shorter days and longer nights set the mood for an evening of crafts with tea, music, and family.
  • Nature as a resource: Chestnuts, colorful leaves, twigs, and acorns – autumn gives you the best materials free of charge.
  • Slowing down: After a busy summer, we spend more time indoors – crafting is the perfect way to relax.
  • Family time: Crafting together creates wonderful memories – whether with kids, friends, or the whole family.
  • Seasonal decorations: You’ll make unique autumn décor that makes your home feel warm, welcoming, and personal.

So why buy decorations when you can easily make them yourself?

When Does Autumn Start?

Meteorologically speaking, autumn officially begins on September 1 in Central Europe and ends on November 30.

Astronomically, it starts with the autumn equinox, usually on September 22nd or 23rd – from that point on, days become shorter than nights.

Autumn is the transitional season between summer and winter, marked by cooler temperatures, colorful foliage, and that special mood that makes it perfect for crafting and decorating.

Autumn or Fall?

Fall and autumn are both perfectly legitimate names for the same season. One often hears that autumn is British, while fall is American – but that’s not entirely true. Both variants of English use both terms, although futumn tends to be considered more formal, and fall is definitely more popular in America.

The word autumn derives from the Latin autumnus; around the 1300s it began displacing harvest as the name for the season, while harvest remains with us as the word for the actual reaping of the crops.

The word fall originates with various writers, that described the season as the “fall of the leaf” – and because that’s awfully long, it eventually got shorted to fall.

But when British settlers emigrated to America, the term fall gained more traction there, while autumn stuck around as the favorite in Britain. It happens.

We personally think it’s nice to have options!

What Decorations are good for Autumn?

Autumn décor is defined by warm colors, natural materials, and cozy details. Popular choices include pumpkins and gourds, dried leaves, twigs, chestnuts, acorns, and other natural materials such as wood or jute. Candlelight, string lights, and handmade accessories such as lanterns or wreaths also help set the seasonal mood. For an extra personal touch, combine classic elements with DIY projects – turning every decoration into a one-of-a-kind piece.

What to Decorate in Autumn?

In autumn, many people like to transform their homes into cozy retreats. It’s no wonder popular spots to decorate include windowsills and entrances – that way you can share the cozy autumn vibes with the outside world with lanterns, wreaths are garlands.

But every free surface is a good surface – tables, countertops, mantlepieces all make good homes for some nice autumn decor!

Small DIY projects such as leaf garlands, candle holders, or autumn picture frames give every room a personal touch. Even kids’ rooms can be brightened up with handmade chestnut animals.
