Known by a myriad of names, the cougar is the world's fourth largest cat, despite being classed as a "small cat". Its scientific name, Puma concolor, references the fact that these cats are usually one uniform color. While cougars are most commonly tawny, it can range from light silver-gray (with one leucistic individual recorded) to reddish brown.
